Congressman Rob Bresnahan’s unannounced appearance at a Democratic fundraiser in Scranton last weekend continues to generate discussion — not only for the surprise visit itself, but for what followed.
Bresnahan, a Republican from Luzerne County, attended a Scranton School Board campaign event Sunday at the Waldorf Park Social Club. His presence at a primarily Democratic gathering drew notice from attendees and soon became a talking point in local political circles. Three candidates sponsoring the event, Joseph Brazil, Danielle Chesek, and Jenna Strzelecki advanced to the general as both Republicans and Democrats, while a fourth, Carol Cleary, advanced solely as a Democrat.
By Monday, Times-Tribune columnist Chris Kelly began making calls about this story. According to his Oct. 8 column, Kelly contacted Scranton School Director Bob Casey, who said he knew Bresnahan and his wife socially. During that conversation, Casey texted Kelly a photo from a night years earlier when he first met the couple at a Lake Harmony restaurant in order to demonstrate their acquaintance.
That image, mentioned in Kelly’s article, later appeared on social media pages connected to Mayor Paige Cognetti’s communications team and the Blue Revival NEPA political organization. Posts used the picture alongside commentary critical of both Bresnahan and Casey, with a personal assault on Casey’s physical appearance.

Because Kelly’s column is the only public record confirming that Casey sent the photo to him, the appearance of the same image on campaign-related pages has prompted questions about how it reached them.
The tone of recent online posts from Mayor Cognetti’s communications director, Wendy Wilson, has also drawn public scrutiny. Because her position represents Cognetti, such posts raise questions about the line between official communication and partisan or personal expression. In a city and district where public trust in institutions is often fragile, maintaining professionalism and avoiding even the appearance of bullying or targeted ridicule is essential for credible governance and campaigning.
On Tuesday, Casey appeared on the WILK Radio Show hosted by Bob Cordaro to respond to these events. He noted that his teeth — which Cognetti’s spokeswoman had publicly mocked — had fallen out due to cancer and radiation treatment. It should also be noted that Bob Casey, a lifelong Democrat, is older than former U.S. Senator Bob Casey and has held elected office as a Democrat for nearly twenty years spanning multiple decades.
Wilson characterized Director Casey as “MAGA,” and soon after, similar Cognetti-linked posts appeared across social media, echoing that language and spreading what critics have called disinformation.

This potential coordination and collusion between Chris Kelly and the Paige Cognetti campaign tests the bounds of ethics. Media-ethics observers note that journalists are expected to maintain independence from political activity. The Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics advises reporters to “avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived,” and to “be accountable and transparent.”
Until answers are provided, the situation underscores the need for clear boundaries between newsrooms and campaigns — and for transparency about how political material enters the public sphere.
